Entry OneDocumented – July 2026

What Is Falling, What Is Being Tried

This is my first entry in a running record. Witness in real time instead of an analysis after the fact. Every season, this page will note two things as they happen. What is falling out of the old structures, and what is being tested in the space they leave open. Some entries will describe a single Crossroads gathering as it unfolds. Others will turn outward, toward movements and philosophies testing the same ground we are doing. All of them belong to the same practice. Documenting the New World as it forms, not theorizing about how it should.

What Is Falling

Trust in old religious and political authority is visibly eroding under its own weight this year. The fight over Christian nationalism keeps sharpening across the country in real time. A system reaching for identity and enforced belonging because its deeper legitimacy no longer holds on its own. Watching how a structure defends itself in this moment reveals exactly what it fears losing.

Elsewhere the falling is gentler, closer to the passing of the torch than a collapse. Joanna Macy, root teacher of the Work That Reconnects (a movement in the spiritual sector), died in July of last year. Her absence is still being felt as her network works out how to carry the Great Turning forward without her. Students of hers launched a six-month facilitator training within months of her passing. They built it in part from her own recorded teachings, carrying her spiral of gratitude, grief, new eyes, and right action forward without her in the room. Watching this transition happen is watching an old root let go while new roots reach into the same soil, live, before anyone knows yet whether they’ll hold.

What Is Being Tried

Economics & Land

In Totnes, England, and in more than a thousand communities across seventy countries right now, the Transition Towns movement is testing a simple premise. A town can plan its own way off fossil dependence and rebuild its local food economy while doing the inner grief work of that transition at the same time, not as two separate tracks. Ancestral permaculture experiments push this further this year, treating land care as spiritual practice in real time and testing whether Indigenous ecological knowledge can function as design methodology rather than folklore.

Faith & Governance

Meanwhile, inside faith communities themselves, a different experiment is running against Christian nationalism from the inside rather than the outside. Progressive Christian organizers are increasingly framing their politics in explicit theological language this year. Arguing openly and in the moment that there is nothing Christian about a nationalism built on exclusion. The Poor People’s Campaign is casting a wider net at the same time, fusing faith language with organizing across race, poverty, and disability rather than keeping those fights in separate lanes.

Technology & Culture

Even the corporate world is absorbing pieces of this shift as it happens, usually with the ethical teeth filed down first. Contemplative practice keeps making its way into Silicon Valley through programs built to develop emotional intelligence in engineers. Folded into what sociologists studying the trend are calling a liturgy of efficiency. Mindfulness trimmed, right now, to fit inside a quarterly meeting rather than challenge the culture that meeting serves. Watching where a practice survives and where its edge gets sanded off, live, says as much about the system absorbing it as about the practice itself.

Where It Rhymes

Held side by side, these experiments are circling the same question this season. Can the inner work and the outer work be treated as one practice instead of two? Transition Towns is answering yes by design, in real time. Corporate mindfulness is answering no whether it means to or not. That gap is the clearest signal available right now for telling which experiments are actually building the New World and which are only decorating the old one.

Where, in your own sector right now, are you watching inner work and outer work already fused into one practice? And where are you watching the aesthetic borrowed without the substance behind it?

Blessed Be
